12 inch / 7 inch Vinyl

Vinyl records evolved from early sound recording devices like Thomas Edison's 1877 phonograph and Emile Berliner's 1887 gramophone. The first flat discs were made of shellac and played at 78 RPM, but the introduction of vinyl in the 1930s led to more durable records. The modern era of vinyl emerged in the 1950s with the introduction of the 33 1/3 RPM long-playing (LP) record for albums and 45 RPM singles, which dominated music consumption until the rise of cassette tapes and CDs.
